KALE is committed to supporting schools to benefit from peer support and to establishing practical mechanisms for learning from and with colleagues.
During 2025/26 we consulted with local leaders to define the most useful features of a school-led school improvement system.
Key principles
Our consultation identified a set of core principles around which such a system needs to be built:
Reciprocity
All professionals working in schools can learn from others and have something valuable to share. At different times a leader or school may have more need of support and/or greater capacity to share practice. The process of sharing and the collaborative dialogue is a learning opportunity.
Whole system
Schools value the opportunity to learn from those in similar contexts and also to explore school improvement across different phases and types of schools. There should be no barriers to practice-sharing and support between maintained and academy schools. The opportunity for dialogue across the whole system can often result in more systemic change.
Equity of access
To be effective across a local system, any approach needs to work for all schools, irrespective of their size, improvement needs, budgets etc.
Sustainability
The system for school-to-school support must be capable of continuing and thriving over time. It cannot be dependent on short-term resource or vulnerable to changes in the external environment. It will need to be adaptive and responsive to the needs of schools.
Local in a national context
A rich school-led system includes learning from local peers and also looking beyond Kent for expertise and collaboration. We will work with local, regional and national partners wherever their expertise and capacity benefits Kent schools. We will strive to ensure that through peer-to-peer support leaders can gain insight from schools who really understand their contextual challenges.
Mechanisms for school-to-school support
For these principles to be embedded in everyday practice, leaders defined the mechanisms that need to be developed in the local system:

Membership of the Priority Project Group
Each of the KALE Priority Projects has a ‘steering group’ of school leaders who play a role in shaping the project, monitoring its progress, proving feedback and engaging others to get involved.
If you would like to join the Peer-to-Peer Learning Project group, please contact info@kale.org.uk
Further information about opportunities to get involved will be available as the project progresses.
Objectives for 2026/27
1. Pilot a model of ‘Education Conversations’ that bring colleagues together to explore shared school improvement challenges
2. Develop guidance to support schools to initiate peer reviews
3. Create a ‘database’ with information about links to whole school practice and to key individuals with a track record of leading improvement
4. Pilot a model of ‘Innovation Exchanges’ through which schools host visits to share their practice
5. Map the available professional development offer linked to specific school improvement priorities for Kent.
6. Establish a facility for schools to open access to planned INSET to colleagues from other schools
Resources linked to the Peer-to-Peer Learning Priority Project will be shared here and/or in the protected KALE Hub.
Leadership Exchange
When you want to find out how other schools are tackling challenges and bringing about improvement, it can often be difficult to know which schools to approach.
To assist leaders, KALE has developed a database of information about different aspects of practice in Kent schools. It has been developed by inviting Headteachers to identify an aspect of practice in their school(s) that they feel is working well and that they would be willing to share with others.
Presently, this is a simple searchable spreadsheet which allows you to search by school improvement priority, school phase and area. You will then be able to read a brief description provided by the Headteacher and access a contact name and email address.
Please note:
The database is not definitive and there is a wide variety of effective practice in the county’s schools that has not yet been included.
The Leadership Exchange is housed in the KALE Hub, a protected area of this website available only to leaders in Kent schools. If you have not yet registered for access, you can do so here.
If you would like to offer an aspect of your own practice to share, please complete the simple form available in the Hub.
